But finding a bipartisan approach
to social Security reform will be diffi-
cult —in part because of the mood of
strident partisanship that has accom-
panied the impeachment debate, in
part because the two parties see Social
Security reforms through very differ-
ent lenses.
Last week, the Religious Action
Center of Reform Judaism urged the
president to make sure that whatever
happens, Social Security- remains a
guaranteed entitlement.
It's critical to people in our com-
munity and to Americans in general
that people be able to count on Social
Security," said `-dark Pelavin, the
RAC's associate director. "There's
room for change in the system, but
complete privatization would be at
odds with the idea of a guarantee. -
Republicans favor plans that would
increase the ability of individuals to
control the money they've saved
through Social Security and allow
investment in the stock market as a
way of increasing the Social Security
trust fund to meet the demands of the
huge Baby Boom population, which is
nearing retirement age.
The White House has signaled
interest in some limited schemes for
expanding the range of Social Security
options, but has resisted extensive pri-
vatization.
Pelavin said the fight could be a
prolonged and difficult one. "Our
communiry has a very big stake in
how it turns our, and we expect to be
active participants," he said. '.
