substance abuse.
It was expanded this year by 20
households in a "scattered-site" for-

boards, the TASD board is quite
active. "We're continually working
on the development of long-term
planning and goals and, of course,
there's always a need to add younger
members to the board." Kellman
says the Travelers Aid Society board
features a great cross-section of
metro Detroiters, with several
African American and Middle East-
ern members.
Henry Wineman II of Wineman
Investment Co. is a board member
emeritus of TASD.
He's the grandson of Gertrude
Wineman, one of the founders of
TASD. Often called "Mrs. Traveler's
Aid," Gertrude Wineman was active
in civic affairs most of her adult
life. At the 40th anniversary party

And Keynote Speaker
Want to wow your guests at your
next nonprofit fund-raiser or
throw a party that's sure to be
the talk of the office the next
day? Talk to the folks who
arranged this year's 75th
Anniversary Gala for the Travel-
. ers Aid Society of Det:oir.
"We said we weren't going to
be just another party with rubber
chicken and people snoring
through the keynote speaker,"
said N. Brewster Broder, Travel-
ers Aid 75th Anniversary Com-
mittee chairperson.
Instead, the creative parry-
planning team arranged a pot-
pourri of surprises, including
international cuisine, live bands,
a coffee bar and more.
Guests ar the mid-October
event were greeted by the Renais-
sance High School Marching
Band on the steps of the old
Wayne County Building.
"It was music, not noise," says
Nathaniel Warshay, director of
resource development for the
TASD. "I was really impressed.'
A champagne reception was
next in the lineup of festivities
while guests walked through a
Traveler's Aid "gallery" filled
With pictures and memorabilia
from the group's archives.
They then mingled on two
floors of the historic Wayne
County Building while sampling
the flavors of Mexico, Greece.
China and the South and
enjoye -i interactive entertain-
ment from each of those cul-
tures.
The upper level was trans-
formed into a coffee lover's
haven, featuring a java bar cafe
and poetry readings. Live perfor-
mances and a surprise auction
rounded out the affair. "There
was very little sitting at the
parry," Warshay says.
It one were to measure the
gala's success by the length of
time people stayed, then the
TASD gets an A+. "The 250
people who came to pay their
regards to us probably weren't
intending to stay, but they did ...
for three hours," Warshay says.
Community Service Award
recipients at the 75th gala, which
was emceed by WDIV-TV's Lila
Lazarus, were Delphine Fair-
banks of Detroit Metropolitan
Airport, Geneva Williams of
United Way Community Ser-
vices, William. McKenzie of
