All
children,

Alex,
deserve
to eat!

Thanksgiving Day

Dear Friends:

A young family was referred to a local emergency pantry because of an elementary teacher's per-
ception and love.

One morning when teaching her first graders a simple lesson on nutrition, a teacher (we'll call her
Mrs. Brown) asked her students to raise their hands if they had not eaten breakfast. Three little
hands flew up into the air.

"Bobby," Mrs. Brown said. "Why didn't you eat breakfast?" "I was in a hurry," he added, while
munching on his mid-morning apple snack.

"Lisa, why did you miss breakfast?" The interested teacher continued. "Mommy woke us up late
and I only had time for a glass of juice."

Mrs. Brown walked around to the last child who had raised his hand. Stooping down to his eye-
level she once again repeated the question. 'Alex, what caused you to skip breakfast today?"

Looking up with the biggest of eyes and the most animated of expressions, toothless Alex exclaimed,
"Why Mrs. Brown! Today wasn't my day to have breakfast!"

As you gather your loved ones near this season, please remember Alex and children like
him. All kids deserve breakfast, (and every other meal as well). With your continued help,
perhaps next year in second grade, Alex will be one of the proud children who won't have
to raise his hand.

Alex, and all of us at The Food Bank of Oakland County, wish you continued health,
success and prosperity in this season of caring and love.

God bless you.
