CONGREGATION BETH SHALOM
invites your entire family to our annual
1,001 Lights
offers four choices: classes for beginning,
intermediate and advanced learners, and
lectures on the weekly parsha.
The beginners' section reveals the
depth of the offerings here; there are
classes on "Parsha Parables," the
Haftorah, Jewish law basics, the ethics
of speech and Jewish holidays, among
others. Remember, these are basically
Internet mailing lists; the Genesis Web
page is just a simple way to shop for the
classes you want and sign up. The learn-
ing material is all free, although don't be
surprised if you get hit up for donations.
The Web site also offers an exten-
sive collection of essays on Genesis
and a slick "Plea for Shabbos" multi-
media presentation, as well as weekly
Torah commentaries accessible from
the opening screen.
Rabbi Menken says his site is not
affiliated with any Jewish organization,
but the perspective here is distinctly
Orthodox. Don't stop by Genesis look-
ing for creative Reform rituals.
Most other serious Jewish learning
sires are daunting places for visitors
whose religious education is lacking.
Project Genesis, with its straightforward
organization and welcoming atmos-
phere, will attract even those who aren't
quite sure what Halachah means.
