Lucent Completes
Huge Takeover
Jerusalem (JPFS) — Lucent
Technologies has acquired the remain-
ing 80 percent of Ra'anana-based
WaveAccess for some $50 million in
cash, the company announced.
Last May, Lucent, which is North
America's largest producer of phone
equipment, purchased a 20 percent
stake in WaveAccess, a provider of high-
speed, wireless data communications
technology, for $6 million.
WaveAccess, which was founded in
1993, employs some 65 workers and
has offices in Wellesley, Mass. The
shareholders in WaveAccess that Lucent
is buying out include local venture capi-
tal funds Teuza and Nitzanim and the
company's founders.
Lucent said that the deal will be
completed by the end of March.
Lucent already has been active in
Israel; last July it acquired the Tel Aviv-
based Lannet in a cash transaction from
the United Kingdom-based Madge
Networks N.V. Following the deal,
Lannet was turned into the company's
local technology center.
Headquartered in New Jersey, Lucent
designs, builds and delivers a wide range
of public and private networks, commu-
nications systems and software.
Spacenet, MCI
Ink A Deal
Jerusalem (JPFS) — GE Spacenet Inc.,
recently acquired by Gilat Satellite
Networks, announced it has won a
record order worth about $100 million
for Very Small Aperture Terminal
(VSAT) sites.
GE Spacenet, a world leader in pro-
viding global communication networks
and services, is to provide 26,000 termi-
nals and related hub stations to MCI
Worldcom Government Markets
Division, which will then provide VSAT
network services to the U.S. Postal
Service.
Petah Tikva-based Gilat, which
designs, develops, manufactures, and
markets VSAT satellite earth stations
and hub equipment, bought U.S.-based
GE Spacenet in September of this year.
The company is a wholly owned sub-
sidiary of Gilat.
The order, the largest in the compa-
ny's history, gives Gilat access to more
than 100 customers and boosts its cur-
rent backlog from $210 million to a
record $310 million.
