The Jewish Community Center sports
and recreation department leadership
has begun a departmental overhaul
that is scheduled to go throughout the
winter.
"We've been taking surveys to reli-
gious and day schools, and sent simi-
lar surveys to other metro and mid-
size JCCs across the country," said
Michelle Tarrance, the sports and
recreation department director.
Tarrance's goal is to find what
other centers' biggest money makers
are, their most popular programs and
what causes their success.
The overhaul came from Tarrance's
concern about not bringing in enough
people to participate in department
events. "Word-of-mouth can only get
us so far," she said. "If people don't
buy into us, what's to say that they
will later?"
The department wants to involve
families with children ages 4 to 10 in
the sports and recreation programs.
The next step is to have a teen recre-
ation program that will involve ath-
letes from last summer's Maccabi
Games, ages 13 to 16.
In all, 3,500 surveys were sent out.
In addition, all volunteer coaches
at the JCC will get certification.
"I've seen coaches throw their clip-
boards when they get scored on,"
Tarrance said. "We want them all to
get certified in the proper skills and
knowledge of the sport."
