last Monday that he no longer com-
manded a majority in the Knesset.
This latest, most severe, crisis in his
turbulent 2 1/2-year reign tosses the

melting pot — on the eve of a state
visit to Israel and the Palestinian terri-
tories by President Clinton and in a
week when Palestinian violence is
growing day by day.
A parliamentary maneuver won the
Likud leader a two-week respite, but if
he fails to woo additional votes from
right-wing critics of the peace process,
his government will fall on Dec. 21.
Elections would then be held in the
new year, at a time when the Labor
opposition leader, Ehud Barak, is nos-
ing ahead in the polls and the Likud's
blue-collar voters are feeling the pinch
of soaring prices in the supermarkets.
The crunch came when the Knesset
debated an opposition bill to hold
