Health Care in cities like Howell and
Belleville and Rochester Hills. But a
year-old program is giving more than
125-150 of these Jewish residents liv-
ing in non-Jewish nursing facilities in
the Detroit-area an opportunity to
observe Jewish tradition.
The venture, called the Jewish
Community Chaplaincy Program and
operated by the Jewish Home and
Aging Services, provides rabbis to
make regular visits to the residents. It
also encourages private individuals
and institutions like synagogues to
adopt" residents and he with them
on special occasions.
Dovid S. Poker, one of rwo rabbis
working for the program, says he has
been spending his recent weeks tour-
ing nursing homes in Wayne,
"
Oakland and Macomb counties in
search of residents who might want
him to visit regularly. Meanwhile
Rabbi A. Irving Schnipper is visiting
10 homes or sheltered-care units a
week, ministering to the residents and
explaining Jewish religion and cus-
toms to the staffs.
Polter says most of the residents he
sees are unaffiliated. He explains that
he is neutral and non-demanding on
his visits, "saying a prayer in Hebrew
and in English, bringing a musical
tape or a challah, or just visiting."
Through the program, 100 Akiva
Hebrew Day School students recently
visited 10 nursing homes on erev Rosh
Hashanah; they say they will continue
to do so for each major holiday.
The program's coordinator, Shirley
Jarcaig, noted that when Jews live in
non-Jewish surroundings "we try to
fill in the gaps, letting them know
that they have not been forgotten by
the _Jewish community."
