JCC Executive Director
David Gad-Harf speaks
in Royal Oak.
Oak because the area reminded her of
the diverse Lincoln Park neighbor-
hood she lived in four years before.
"People are more accepting here,"
she said, noting she's within walking
distance of many of her Jewish
friends.
Nancy Sheer Hulbert and Janine Kovitz,
gather information.
Kovitz agreed, citing the Royal Oak
schools' diversity in celebrating all
holidays.
She came to the meeting to find
out about a Jewish youth group that
would be closer for her children
because, she said, there aren't enough
Jewish kids in the public schools.
Some residents said young married
couples tend to move out of the area
once they have school-aged children
or send their children to private
school because they're being picked on
for being Jewish.
One young couple with a 2-year-
old and a newborn will move out of
the area when their kids go to school
so they can be with other Jewish kids.
They have wonderful neighbors,
but with Christmas tree lights,
our street looks like Las Vegas."
Residents said that current
programming puts too much
emphasis on the elderly and
small children and that they
wanted smaller programs for
young adults or college-aged
people. They advocated either
more programming at the
Jimmy Prentis Morris Jewish
Community Center in Oak Park
or a shuttle bus to the Kahn
Jewish Community Center in
West Bloomfield.
Residents also thought local
markers should stock a few kosher
or Passover items, and complained
that maps of large-scale Jewish com-
munity events seldom include Royal
Oak or Detroit.
Gad-Harf said the comments will be
shared with members of the appropri-
ate organizations, in this case, BBYO
and the Agency for Jewish Education
of Metropolitan Detroit. Future meet-
ings are planned for Troy/Rochester
Hills, Plymouth/Canton and Grosse
Pointe.
