Seymour Wasserman:
Beloved Haberdasher

Seymour (Sy) Wasserman, co-owner
of Henry the Hatter, died Dec. 3. A
Southfield resident, he was 82.
Mr. Wasserman's love for hats
began when he worked in his uncle's
hat factory in New York. He bought
his own store in 1939. Nine years
later, in 1948, he moved to Michigan
to purchase a store established in
1893 by Henry Komorofslcy. Its

name was Henry the Hatter.
When the business celebrated its
100th anniversary in 1993, Mr.
Wasserman assured well-wishers that
he and his partner, son Paul, intended
to run their downtown Detroit land-
mark a lot longer than that.
Till the end of his life, Mr. Wasser-
man continued to work three days a
week at the store, located at 1307
Broadway.
While hats went in and out of
fashion over the years, with the 1960s
a low point, Henry the Hatter always
carried a complete stock.
Coleman Young was one of the
many Detroit mayors who shopped at
Henry the Hatter, his preference

being the Borsalino homburg.
Henry the Hatter survived because
it embraced a changing array of cus-
tomers and adapted to their needs.
When the Indiana Jones character in
Raiders of the Lost Ark spawned a rush
for soft felt hats with down-turned
brims, Henry the Hatter offered them
in every price rang,..
In 1985, the Wassermans opened a
second store in Hamtramck, and a
third in Southfield in 1991. But the
Detroit store remained the heart of
the enterprise.
Mr. Wasserman was a sergeant in
the Air Force who served in the South
Pacific, a 30-degree Mason with the
Perfection Lodge, a Shriner and a
president of the Probus Club of
Detroit. He also belonged to the Tam
O'Shanter Country Club in West
Bloomfield, Congregation Shaarey
Zedek in Southfield and the Down-
town Synagogue in Detroit. In 1977,
Mr. Wasserman received the highest
award from the Headware Institute of
America.
Mr. Wasserman is survived by his
wife, Doris; son and daughter-in-law,
Paul and Cathy Wasserman of Farm-
ington Hills; daughter, Karal Wasser-
man of Ypsilanti; grandson, Zachary
Aaron Wasserman; brother and sister-
in-law, Milton and Renee Wasserman
of Livingston, N.J.; sister and broth-
er-in-law, Florence and Barry Kugal
of New York; brother-in-law and sis-
ter-in-law, Ann and John Erving; son-
in-law, Max Seakwood and other dear
relatives and friends. He was the lov-
ing father of the late Constance Seak-

wife, Miriam Ciaccio; brother-in-law,
Emanuel Falcon of New York; sisters-in-
law, Arlene Falcon-Marchese of Idaho
and Mrs. Dave (Carol) Tourkow of Cal-
ifornia; nieces, Willow Marchese, Crysta
