pull out once in a while — it's always a
reminder of your family."
About two years ago it was suggest-
ed to Kaczander-Cohen that her quilts
would make nice Chupahs. From
there she started quilting Chupahs
(hand-held only) as gifts and ultimate-
ly created two very different Chupahs
foi her two of her three daughters. For
Stacey she created a cream and white
Chupah made with fabrics from both
the bride's and groom Peter Schrieber's
family. The materials include cotton,
silk, corduroy and lace. There are
pieces from Stacey's wedding gown,
Peter's T-shirt, Stacey's security blanket
and a blouse Kaczander-Cohen wore
to Stacey's Bat Mitzvah. The fringe
border on the Chupah is from Peter's
grandmother.
Kaczander-Cohen quilted a much
different Chupah for eldest daughter
Debbie and her husband Michael
Thomas. She used bright pastel and
floral fabrics for a watercolor Chupah
with colors that represent the sky,
earth, heaven and sun. To highlight
the piece, Kaczander-Cohen stitched
the lines of Debbie's face into the
quilt. If you stand back, you can see
Debbie's profile amidst the greenery
arid stars.
Most of the artist's quilts are deli-
cate works of art, meant more for dis-
play rather than use, however a
durable alternative for beds or chairs
are the denim quilts. Sewn together
from scraps of old blue jeans, the
quilts are fashionable and comfortable
— the reverse side is lined in soft flan-
nel. Another popular gift and keep-
sake are the T-shirt quilts, taking
someone's collection of special cotton
tees and making a unified cover.
The, most recent quilt Kaczander-
Cohen made enveloped 96 pictures
and involved roughly 50 hours of
labor. But she considers the hours well
spent. With each project she takes
pride in knowing that she is creating
something very personal that will be
cherished for years to come.
"I really like working on quilts that
have some emotion in them like the
m,:mory quilts. I get to know the client
through the pictures and their stories."
And with lots of thread, fabric and
just the right placement, the photos
and tales will live on through the gen-
er:, rions.
