only travel together to Toronto and
Cleveland. The boys' schedule con-
sists of Michigan High School
Athletic Association (MHSAA) Class
C or D religious schools, such as
Wyandotte Mt. Carmel and West
Side Christian. This year, the boys
will play Class A Clawson and have
12 games against day schools when
they play Cleveland, Columbus and
at the CHAT and Yeshiva University
tournaments.
The Akiva girls' varsity has lost to
Agape Christian in Canton, and to
Kensington, a school that feeds into
Birmingham Marian.
"It's a big positive for us to play
against non-Jewish schools because we
get a higher level of competition,"
Kohn said. "But it's difficult playing
against schools that have had a pro-
gram for 25 years, compared to our six
months."
The girls' season is not at the same
time as the MHSAA teams in the
state, whose season ends tomorrow
with the state finals. The boys' varsity
ream, which Kohn also coaches, plays
in the winter as well, but doesn't prac-
tice with the girls. The boys' team has
had offers to join a conference, but
can't due to Friday night scheduling
that would violate Shabbat.
Basketball became the sport of
choice at Akiva almost out of necessity.
"In Michigan, it's a reality that
from November until March you
can't be outside much," said Rabbi
Gross. "The other thing is that we
just don't have the numbers. Some
schools can pick 11 out of 100 possi-
ble players, while we have to pick 11
out of 14."
Gross has seen the positive ramifi-
cations of having basketball at his
school. "I get calls from principals
who ask who our students are," Gross
said, "not just because of on the
court, but off it. Our kids are always
leaders." O
