good to get out life's daily frustrations,
and Barney is a wonderful target. Try
engaging older children in making a
purple dinosaur snowman (to make
him even more realistic, spray with a
mix of a few drops blue-and-red food
coloring and a lot of water), then
throw snowballs his way all after-
: noon! In case you need to work up a
little extra aggression, just sing that
awful Barney song, or consider any
one of the oh-so-cutesy cast who are
always tilting their heads from side to
side and raising their perky little eye-
; brows.
Park Place
You may get cold in the snow, but
chances are your children won't —
especially if you bring along a they-
' mos filled with yummy hot chocolate.
Parks remain virtually empty through-
our the cold months, though they still
offer a great deal of fun. The swings
continue to work, and so does the
slide, and all those climbing things
children love. So one snowy day
dress as warm as you can and go to
the park. You'll have a lot more fun
than you could have imagined, and
it a good bet you'll have the place
all to your-
self.
It's In The Cards
After you've done Crazy Eights, and
Rummy, and Memory, and Go Fish,
and War 1,000 times you may be
wondering: is there anything else to
play with cards? Why not challenge
your children to come up with a
game of their own? Give each child
a deck and a piece of paper and
pencil, to write all the rules.
A Sparkling Evening
July 4 is such a great holiday, why
should it come only once a year? Buy
boxed sparklers and easy-to-manage
(and extremely safe) fireworks and set
them off on your front porch in the
middle of winter. You don't even have
to wait until 10 p.m. because it gets
dark so early in December and Janu-
ary. Though with a snow-covered
ground you needn't worry about
grass catching on fire from the sparks,
be extremely cautious when playing
with fireworks (which should be han-
dled only by an adult).
