another attraction. Jewish life is
vibrant in the greater Fort Laud-
erdale area. Cultural events, syna-
gogues of every denomination,
kosher restaurants, Jewish newspa-
pers are all readily available.
It was easy to find Congregation
Amchah. It's located just block off
the beach at 2701 E. Sunrise Boule-
vard. Here the casual, friendly
atmosphere that seemed well suited
to the ambiance of sunny Fort
Lauderdale itself.

The southern
Florida city has
b ecome the
yachting capital
of the world.

On another afternoon, we drove
to nearby Hollywood, also consid-
ered part of the greater Fort Laud-
erdale area, where we took a walk
on the boardwalk, stopped into
Sarah's Kosher Pizza and then visit-
ed two synagogues.
In the lobby of Temple Sinai at
1400 North 46th Avenue, we
admired the striking art work done
by congregant Susan Miller, an
a rtist who lives in Hollywood. We
also admired the spacious sanctuary,
with modern design and stained
glass windows.
With 3000 individual members,
this is the largest Conservative syn-
agogue in the area. Members
include year round residents plus
"snowbirds" (those who fly south in
winter). The congregation even has
an associate membership category
for those who are here only during
the winter months.
Just a short distance away was
Temple Beth El at 1351 S. 14th
Street, a Reform congregation.
Especially striking was the carved
glass covering the Ark.
Indeed, visitors to greater Fort
L auderdale will have no difficulty
finding Shabbat services that suit
their interests and much more.
Whether it's a synagogue near the
beach, a kosher meal or a heimische
ambiance, Jewish travelers will find
a warm welcome in the Venice of
America. 7
