But it does have more than 300 miles of inland waterways and 42,000 registered boats, from yachts to water taxis. So Fort Lauderdale is proud to be dubbed the "Venice of America." The Intracoastal Waterway, the beach, the yachts and cruise ships all help to define this sunny Florida city situated on the Atlantic coast between Palm Beach and Miami. Naturally, we began our explo- ration of this Florida-style Venice with a boat ride. We climbed aboard the Carrie B, a replica of a 19th century Mississippi River pad- dleboat, and settled down for a 45— minute narrated tour. Along the way, we saw waterfront estates, boats of all sizes and shapes, and landmarks such as the site of the first army fort, built in 1838 and named for its commander, Major William Lauderdale. 29673 Northwestern Highway • Applegate Shopping Center 248.357.0400 gh a f idie w ig - :: ..,.,g .0 1, 4 WO , ' , Jo'y gee Don't miss a thing. We soon had close-up views of three huge luxury cruise ships all docked here. Our cruise also gave us close-up Views of more yachts than we'd ever seen. In fact, a sign on the 17th Street Causeway reads, "Welcome to Fort Lauderdale, Yachting Capital of the World." Although boats and the water are a major attraction, Fort Lauderdale has other pleasures. We enjoyed window shopping on Las Olas Boulevard, with gas lights and greenery, a chic boulevard with bou- tiques, galleries and restaurants. We strolled on the wide beach prome- nade with its creative design of curves representing waves. The people parade was just as eye-catching, with rollerbladers, jog- gers, power walkers, cyclists, all enjoying this smooth promenade with its unobstructed view of white sand and ocean waves.
