Denver's Ranya Kelly.
Warehouse volunteers will include
representatives of other Jewish corn-,
munity agencies, such as Yad Ezra and
Jewish Family Service, as well as tem-
ple members, including middle and
high school students participating in
the Ellin and Harold Lawson Youth
Institute.
Warehoused items will be catego-
rized and sorted according to size and
type, stacked on tables and in piles on
the floor, with signs marking each
grouping. More than 50 charitable
agencies, including churches, shelters,
missions, soup kitchens and resettle-
ment groups, have been pre-assigned
allotted times to visit. Each agency
will arrive with specific wish lists, such
as the Sarah Fisher Home's request for
girls' coats, in larger sizes, to fir preg-
nant teens.
Although the project is called a coat
drive, with gently pre-worn, clean out-
erwear its focus, other donated items
are welcome, too. New hats, mittens,
car seats, strollers and high chairs are
being collected, as well as pieces of
luggage, important because, as Geren-
raich explains, "a suitcase may end up
being used as somebody's closet."
Food items aren't being collected, but
are being distributed thanks to Kelly's
donation of soup-kitchen size containers
of government-rationed foods.
In the future, Temple Beth El hopes
to enlarge collections by involving
more churches and synagogues as
partners. A main objective is to recruit
local retailers and eliminate the need
to go to Colorado to reach the collec-
tion goals.
Vital to Svme's project is the inclu-
sion of temple youth, with each one
asked to donate one coat every week
during the drive. Emphasizing the
importance of the students' involve-
ment, Syme says, "When all is said and
done, our adult Jewish identities, in a
large measure, are a product of our
Jewish childhood memories. We need
to be memory makers for our children.
This coat drive is one of the memories
that they will carry with them. They
will know that, for a brief moment in
time, they made a difference. Ei
