Joel Grishaver,
Scholar In Residence

Joel Lurie Grishaver, teacher, story-
teller, editor, cartoonist and itinerant
preacher, will be the scholar in resi-
dence for the second annual Ellin and
Harold Lawson Youth Institute, Dec.
11-13, at Temple Beth El.
The institute offers Beth El stu-
dents an opportunity to meet with
and learn from nationally known
teachers in three days dedicated to
education and social action. The
students will culminate the weekend
by volunteering Sunday morning
with the temple's third annual coat
drive.
Grishaver will speak at Shabbat ser-
vices, 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 11, and
10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 12. He also
will speak to the 9:15 a.m. Torah
study class preceding Saturday ser-
vices.
A teacher of Jewish texts to chil-
dren, teens and adults, Grishaver is
the author of 60 books and co-owner
of Torah Aura Publications and the
Alef Design Group.
The community is welcome to
attend Friday and Saturday services.

Rabbi Friedman
Gives Talk

Rabbi Mannis Friedman, lecturer and
author, will speak at the annual Bais
Chabad Education Center dinner
honoring community leader Hannan
Lis, Monday, Dec. 14 at the Michigan
Inn, Southfield.
Friedman was born in 1946 in
Prague, Czechoslovakia, immigrating
to the United States with his parents
in 1950. A public speaker for the
Lubavitch Youth Organization
beginning in 1964, he joined Lubav-
itch of the Upper Midwest in 1969
as director of student outreach after
receiving his rabbinical ordination.
Friedman is co-founder of Bais
Chana Women's Institute, in Duluth,
Minn. The first women's yeshiva of its
kind in the world, the institute has
attracted 6,000 women from all parts
of the world and from a variety of
backgrounds.
Friedman weaves together legends,
parables and his trademark humor at
all his engagements. His series of orig-
inal lecture tapes, "Chasidic Thoughts
at Bais Chana," is available for pur-
chase.
