DETROIT
JEWISH NEWS
'DT
Cheyenne, \X/yo., regarding the old
days survivors. I thought you might be
interested in a poem from my pub-
lished book, Rhymes of Our Times,
titled "The Good Old Days Are
Now!"
"How many times have we heard
some people say, If only the past
could be brought here today.' But to
look back through the historical haze,
they'd find no such thing,. as the 'good
old days.'
"Just look back many years, and
what do we find? The ice man, the
milk man, and life was a grind. No
minimum wage, or no wage at all. No
flu shots, no pill, no World Series ball.
"There were girdles with garters,
and bloomers for girls, The men wore
knickers, and mustaches with twirls.
No pantyhose, no vitamins, and no
TV, no ice makers, dishwashers, deLaf
coffee or tea.
"There were high-button shoes,
and the men wore spats, the gals wore
long dresses, the guys Homburg hats.
No refrigerators, no freezers, way back
then, no antibiotics, or penicillin.
"There were clothes to clean, and
diapers to scrub, no washer and dryer,
just a board and a tub. No air condi-
tioning, and no hair dryers, no flea
markets, swap meets, just sellers and
buyers.
"No seat belts, contact lenses, or
Jack LaLanne shape. No ballpoint
pens, no plastics, and no Scotch tape.
No Social Security and no Medicare.
There was nothing for old folks,
nothing to share.
"No jets, no Concorde, and no
747, no Bakkers, no Swaggerts, just a
direct line to Heaven. No credit c..rds,
or 'buy now, pay later', no computers,
robots, or calculator.
"No garbage disposal, or trash
compactor, no Oscar, Emmy, or Tony
for best actor. No organ transplant,
artificial heart, or bypasses, no vac-
cines like Salk for polio to save the
masses.
"No shuttle trips to the moon, or
outer space, no equal rights, civil
rights, or attention to race. No free-
ways, no condos, or TV dinner, no
diets or classes, to make vou thinner.
"So when we look back, it's very
plain to see, we've come a long Ixav,
when we made history. To accept this
tribute, America can take a bow ...
No matter what some people say, the
`good old days are now! '"
