wish I could be mayor of New York."
This CD features a wide range of
operatic and popular songs. I am
somewhat leery of including a rendi-
tion of Ave Marie, which I did not
listen to, as much as the note writer
wants to portray its spirituality. His
"Kaddish," sung in the NDR stu-
dios, a building that housed a syna-
gogue until 1938, is not only a can-

Inspired by Jewish artists Craig
Taubman, Safam and Debbie
Friedman as well as the Beatles,
Simon and Garfunkel and the
Rolling Stones, Yom Hadash is a
pleasant group. Their original
melodies and ballads are quite
refreshing and make for easy listen-
ing. Worth noting are "Hallelu," an
upbeat rendition of this Psalm,
"Modeh Ani," the traditional wake
up call, and my favorite, "Jerusalem,"
a melodious composition describing
the Jews' need to live in Jerusalem.
The Band's members include: broth-
ers Jon and Josh Nelson, and their
Hebrew school buddies David
Letkowitz and Adam Dehner. Their
concert list includes USY camps and
Federation Drive kickoffs.

Cantorial Misha Alexandrovich
Recordings 1937-1997; Verlag Music
Misha Alexandrovich was proba-
bly one of the USSR's best kept
secrets. His career spanned over
eight decades. Billed as the "The
Wunderkind," Alexandrovich sang
for sold-out concert halls all over
Europe. His first concert, in Warsaw,
was at age 7. On this CD, Misha
Alexandrovich expresses his true spir-
ituality as one of Europe's finest can-
tors. He served as chief cantor of
Lithuania for over two decades.
Upon his arrival in New York, in
1965, then-Mayor John Lindsay
remarked, "I wish I could sing like
torial accomplishment, but a true
remembrance of the six million mar-
tyrs whom the very building repre-
sent. I was particularly thrilled with
"A Glessele L'Chaim" A light-hearted
Yiddish song that depicts the true
spirit of Jewish musical culture.

King Django's Roots and Culture;
Triple Crown Records.
King Django is a versatile musi-
cian. Regarded as one of New York's
premier ska makers, (according to
Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, ska
is Jamaican popular music that is a
blend of folk music, calypso, rhythm
and blues, and jazz) King Django
was originally Jeff Baker of Brooklyn.
In this CD he plays vocals, trom-
bone, melodica, glockenspiel and
other percussion. His voice has Bob
Dylanesque qualities. It starts out
with "Shtiklach" a reggae/new age,
Yiddish piece bemoaning the plight
of working hard and getting nothing
for it. The CD also features Andy
Statman, probably the world's great-
est mandolin player. The reggae
klezmer numbers on this CD are
great. He also experiments quite well
in "Slaughter," a haunting piece
depicting the plight of Holocaust
