Klezmer music seems like just the perfect medium for Petr Tchaikovsky's classic holiday bal- let. Shirim has been performing tradi- tional and klezmer music since 1982. Their December 25 concerts have become a tradition of the Boston Jewish community. Last year they wanted to incorporate some of the music that bombards people in malls and doctors' offices at that time of year into their repertoire. Carols were nixed. Tchaikovsky was a natural. Many of the underlying musical pro- gressions from the Nutcracker share common roots with klezmer. Half of the CD is devoted exclusive- ly to the Nutcracker Featured are "Kozatsky Until You Dropsky" (Trepak), "Dance of the Latke Queens," "Araber Tants" and "Waltz of the Rucrcr bb elah." Also featured are works from Mahler, Satie and Enesco. Shirim has done extensive touring of North America and their performing was featured in Woody Allen's Deconstructing Harry. The members of the group include New England contemporary and the traditional, the unexpected and the familiar. Frank London of new age klezmer fame, arranges "Mdoz Tzur' brilliant- ly. The performer, Marc Cohn, por- trays a Dvlanesk style that makes this track flow. "Dybbuk Shers" is a haunting traditional klezmer tune per- formed by the world renowned Klezmatics. Peter Himmelman and David Bronza cap off this disk with an original number called "Light Up The World," which can ecumenically be enjoyed by all. If you're having a Chanukah party and need some left of center background music, choose Light Up the World. *0 x:x
