whether you're in Washington or
Michigan. It's just so hard. For us,
it's a little easier because we don't
have children. We only have to be
flexible with each other. I know
many couples who manage two
careers with kids, and I just stand in
awe of them. We try to be as sup-
portive as possible [with each other].
When I was preparing for an unex-
pected trip this week, my husband
jumped into action and tried to help
me get ready in only a couple of
hours. He's terrific that way. There
are times when we're both under a
deadline pressure, and we just have
to make a few sacrifices.
JN: What do you like to do in your
free time?
AM: We both love to read. We love
music, and we're passionate about
baseball. We like to stay home, have a
good meal and spend some time with
each other.
JN: Is there something you'd like to
do in your career that you haven't
had a chance to do yet?
AM: There are so many things. I'd
like to be able to do more travel,
especially in areas of crisis. I would
have liked to have gone to Honduras
and Nicaragua in the aftermath of
the hurricane and focus more atten-
tion on the suffering of the people
there. I would like to go back to
Haiti because I really feel we dropped
the ball in not following through
with our attempts to help the people.
I'd like to do more traveling in the
Third World. I have not traveled in
Africa, which is a great goal of mine.
I'd like to go back to Afghanistan and
spend more time getting into the
refugee camps.
JN: Is there a lot of research to do
before you go to a new country?
AM: I do a lot of research about cus-
toms, culture and politics. One of the
reasons [my work is] so much fun is
that I'm learning all the time. Li
