to see kids work out in the gym, to
teach them the rules. I get the fulfill-
ment of helping someone. And I've
met a lot of nice people," although
not many Jews. "There are a few of us
in the fringes, but not a lot."
To become a judge, Tarnow first
took a class and studied the rulebook,
then he sat ringside with licensed
judges, watching them work, until
those judges determined that he was
competent to judge a bout.
It took about a year before Tarnow
began judging. It took another two
years of training to become a licensed
referee.
Tarnow has never boxed, but he.
appreciates "what it takes to get into
the ring: the training, the discipline.
And being able to take a hit. That's a
different kind of person. It's not some-
thing that I personally would enjoy,
but other people do."
As a business owner, Tarnow
believes he has something in common
with boxers.
Parr of [boxing's appeal] is the
man-to-man discipline. It's not a
team. This is someone who, when
they get done with the fight, they see
what they did, and I like that," he
said. "I am self-employed and that's
how I live my life. What I do every
day will make a difference as to how I
succeed, or don't succeed.
"That follows through with the
boxing. If someone doesn't train, does-
n't work out well, they won't win."
Boxing was also Tarnow's ticket to
the big screen.
When Tarnow heard the movie Out
of Sight would film in Detroit and
include boxing scenes, he contacted
the casting company and asked if they
needed a real referee for the fight
scenes. They did, and Tarnow was
hired for about 24 hours of work over
a two-day span, including 10 hours in
the ring. The result? Eighteen seconds
of screen time.
In real life, Tarnow has refereed
national amateur events, including the
Silver Gloves championships for 9-to-
15-year-olds, and the Golden Gloves
championships for 16-year-olds and
up. He's judged professional fights,
but hasn't refereed any.
He plans to continue working ama-
teur tournaments and hopes to ref
some professional bouts as well.
"I really hope to do more national
tournaments," he says. "I hope to do a
national title fight. I think that's what
all officials work toward. They, along
with the boxers, progress as you get
better. H
