THE JEWISH COMMUNITY COUNCIL IS BRINGING TOWN HALL MEETINGS ,Teo YOUR COMMUNITY Troy chester Hills Area H Orthodox, With A Sense Of Humor Grosse Pointe Plymouth Canton htip://www.ahavat- israel.corn/ Some sites on the Web are sort of hard to figure out. What, exactly, are they peddling? What's their agenda? That seems to be the case with the Ahavat Israel home page, put up by an Israeli group that brings a strong point of view to its Internet enterprise. But figuring out exactly what that point of view is can be a chore. Maybe it's just as simple as the page's prominently displayed statement of purpose: "Beyond all of the differences that stand between us, we are all the children of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. We are all one family, with one land, and one destiny This site is based [on]) the principles of Ahavat Am Israel — Love for the Jewish People." Not exactly illuminating, but no matter: this is a reasonably comprehen- sive and attractive site that combines some pretty basic Jewish learning, decent graphics and even a frill page of humor — a stand-out feature in the world of Orthodox Web sites. The site opens with a basic menu, the mission statement and a series of choices. The "Torat Israel" section includes a handful of brief writings on Shabbat, kosher food, "signs and sym- bols," holidays, life-cycle events and prayer. This is not knowledge in depth; each section simply includes a handful of quotations intended to be inspirational, and assorted pictures of Jewish sages. There's an interesting section on the Jewish calendar, and a gizmo to convert dates. Unfortunately, there's a big Y2K glitch here; it won't calculate dates beyond 1999. What sets Ahavat Israel apart are its entertainment and enrichment offer- ings, including a huge collection of Jewish music. There are a bunch of games the kids will love, including Super Mario and Pac-Man, although the online versions are slow and rudimentary. There are chat and discussion forums — and an extensive collection of the kind of jokes you might hear if you hung around Brooklyn for a while. Don't miss the golfing rabbi and the parrot-in-the- freezer jokes. Not a glitzy site, not particularly but worth a visit nonetheless. deep Check it out at: http://www.ahavat-israel.com/ —James D.
