Presenting at the 1998 Mathematics
and Science Fall Conference co-spon-
sored by the Detroit Area Council of
Teachers of Mathematics and the Met-
ropolitan Detroit Science Teachers
Association were three teachers from
the same family. Marvin Weingarden
of Southfield (middle) is an assistant
professor of mathematics at Madonna
University in Livonia. His twin sons
Michael Weingarden of Troy (left)
and Steve Weingarden of Royal Oak,
have followed in their father's foot-
steps and are each in their fifth year of
teaching math. Mike teaches at
Mount Clemens Middle School and
serves as the mathematics department
head. Steve is a teacher at Berkley
High School where he was 1996-97
Teacher of the Year.

Dr. Samuel Perov, Department of
Anesthesiology chief at Detroit
Receiving Hospital and Hutzel Hospi-
tal, regularly hosts anesthesiologists
from Latvia for training at DMC and
Wayne State Uni-
versity. Currently,
he's hosting a
young anesthesiol-
ogist from Riga;
she is studying
with him for two
months at Receiv-
ing Hospital. For
the last four years,
Perov has sent
many anesthesia

tors, cardiac moni-
tors, books, journals, different medical
equipment and medication to Riga. A
significant part of his humanitarian
aid is to the only Jewish hospital in
the Baltic — Bicur Holim. Perov
came to the U.S. 20 years ago and
Detroit 16 years ago. He's now associ-
ate professor of anesthesiology at
Wayne State University and the
Department of Anesthesiology's vice
chairman of clinical affairs. For the
last four years, in association with the
European Society of Anesthesiologists,

graduate of the
college and 1996 graduate of the Uni-
versity of Detroit Mercy Law School,
Sandler serves as finance director for
U.S. Congressman Joe Knollenberg.

Daniel Cherrin, 25, this month became
the fifth person in his family to become
a lawyer. In the 1960s, his father
Michael and uncle Marvin Cherrin
became attorneys. Shortly thereafter, in
the 1970s, the brothers' cousin Mervin
Cherrin took the lawyer's oath; and in
1995, Daniel's brother, Scott Cherrin,
29, was sworn in. In addition, this
December, Marvin's youngest child and
Daniel's cousin, P.J., 25, will graduate
from the Detroit College of Law at
Michigan State University where Daniel
also graduated.

Zachary Mondrow, a student at West
Bloomfield High School, was nomi-
nated to the National Honor Society.
He obtained a 3.5 grade point average
along with a certain amount of com-
munity service. He will be inducted in
a ceremony this month.

Peter D. Cummings will become
chairman of the Detroit Symphony
Orchestra Hall Board of Directors.
Cummings, now vice chairman, was
elected at the board's recent retreat at
Cranbrook House.
