Ehud Federman, Dr. Soliman
Sherafiz, Seymour Brode and
Aiman Arafat meet in Tel Aviv.
A Benefit for our 'rail older Adults
sponsored by the
and China, and American wrestlers
competing against Iran in Teheran last
February "Sports could be the main
thing we could do to build a bridge."
Arafat said Brode and other ITC
leaders have been helpful. "We want
to see if they can help, or to just point
us in the right direction," he said.
Brode has enthusiastically pursued
the potential partnership. There is no
timetable set, but Brode suggests "the
sooner, the better." Brode said he'd be
in charge of fund-raising for the site.
Israel Tennis Center leadership will
lend its expertise in the design, build-
ing and planning as long as the PTA
gets the land.
Brode and ITC Executive Director
Ehud Federman met with Aiman
Arafat and PTA Honorary President
Soliman Shurafa in Tel Aviv in
October after the Palestinians contact-
ed Brode. Since Brode's return to
Michigan, Arafat has met with the
heads of the ITC facility in Ashkelon
where he was given plans for existing
ITC facilities.
In the interim, "there is talk about
bringing Palestinian kids into
Ashkelon," Brode said. "As we get closer
to peace, it becomes more important."
Brode used tennis as a bridge to
peace 20 years ago, five years after
the ITC was founded, with the
opening of a tennis center in Kiryat
Shemona near the Lebanon border.
That center brought in Lebanese
children to play with Israelis. "If they
could play together, they could live
together," he said.
Bringing in Lebanese children
ended in 1982 with the Lebanon
war.
The ITC has 14 facilities totaling
124 courts in Israel. The first center
was built in 1976 and more than
250,000 Israeli children have taken
part in ITC programs.
Two of the complexes have thrived
in otherwise difficult conditions. In
Jaffa, former Mayor Shlomo Lahat
called the local ITC, built in 1979,
the reason for a 50 percent cut in the
crime rate.
"I doubt if 100 social workers
could have done in such a short time
what the tennis centers have done for
children," Lahat said.
Israeli leaders honored the Israel
Tennis Centers in 1993 with the
Israel Prize, for having the country's
best social program. [71
