Tobye Bello and Beth Rubinstein stand at the new children's tile wall recently dedicated at
the Irving and Beverly Laker Education and Youth Complex at Congregation Shaorey
Zedek. The women conceived the idea and theme for the wall, focusing on a project that
would help children feel they had contributed to the creation of the facility. In August
1997, Mrs. Rubinstein conducted workshops where children and youth, from infants to
high school students, were invited to create their own tile.
Eventually, the boys and girls produced some 500 tiles, ail of which Mrs. Rubinstein
glazed and fired; she also arranged for and supervised, the tiles' installation.
Symbolizing the Jewish calendar, the wall is made of 4x4 tiles representing the holidays.
Artist Carolyn Wilson worked with Mrs. Rubinstein to create the color scheme and develop
tile placement. The wall begins with Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Shemini Atzeret
and Simchat Torah, with colors representing the fall. As tiles continue counterclockwise, the
color scheme turns whiter, with winter colors and the holidays of Chanukah and Tu B'She-
vat. The colors become greener, moving into spring and Purim, Pesach, Israel Indepen-
dence Day, Lag B'Omer and Shovuot. Finally, the colors are blue and show Shabbat.
