Names Quilt
On Display

Communities internationally will
unite in observing the 11th annual
World Aids Day, Tuesday, Dec. 1. As
commemorated by the United
Nation's World Health Organization,
this year's theme "Be A Force For
Change" reminds us that each of us
has the opportunity and responsibility
to reduce the spread of HIV and
AIDS around the world.
Panels from the NAMES Project
AIDS Memorial Quilt will be on dis-
play throughout the Detroit area,
including all day at the Jimmy Prentis
Morris Jewish Community Center,
15110 West Ten Mile Road in Oak
Park. Some of the panels present will
include those made by teens of local -
congregations. Members of the
Michigan Jewish AIDS Coalition
(MJAC) will be on hand to answer
questions and help anyone interested
in making a new panel. The display is
free and open to the public.
Each 3x6 foot panel represents
someone who has died with AIDS.
The whole Quilt contains over 44,000
panels-about one-tenth the total num-
ber of men, women and children in
the United States alone who have died
so far with this terrible disease.
The goals of The Quilt include: To
remember those who have passed on
and to console their survivors. To
promote compassion and support to
all living with the virus, as well as
their families, friends, and care-givers.
To remind us that AIDS is still an
incurable disease, despite all new
medications and treatments, and it
affects people of all faiths, races, ages,
and lifestyles. To reaffirm that HIV
P. and AIDS are preventable, through
education and behavior change.
Volunteers would be welcome and
appreciated to help staff a display
table at the Oak Park JCC. For infor-
mation, contact MJAC, (248) 594-
6522. For information, contact the
NAMES Project Metro Detroit
Chapter, (248) 691-1122.
