Eliyahu Essas, a brilliant mathe- matician who had lost his job after applying for aliyah, became the leader of the largest group of Jewish refus- niks in Moscow. As head of the Jewish underground, he led a deter- mined and quite remarkable battle to keep the flame of Jewish education glowing under the most oppressive circumstances. Today, Rabbi Essas lives in Jerusalem where he is the director of Ohr Somayach's Russian Language Department.
