Scholarships, ranging from $250 to $1,500, are available to high school juniors and seniors of Arab, Chaldean or Jewish descent. More than $10,000 in scholarships was awarded to the winners last year from the proceeds of the Friends' annual dinner held in May, which honors an outstanding leader from the Arab and Jewish communities. All student participants were acknowledged at the dinner and also participated in a program on WKBD-UPN TV50, where they shared their experiences. Students are paired to write a three-part essay, "My Culture, My Friend's Culture and the Ties that Bind." The Friends' Essay Committee is co-chaired by Matt Kell, son of the late Duane Kell, and Shelly Komer Jackier. Applicants are encouraged to get to know their essay partner, by meet- ing their families and participating in some of their activities. This prepares students to write their essay and also helps develop meaningful friendships between them. The students have uniformly stated that they enjoyed the experience and discovered they have more similarities than differ- ences. On Dec. 8, students who have reg- istered will attend a compulsory meeting at TV50 to learn more about the rules and procedures of the con- test. They will meet their essay part- ner, receive their essay contest T- shirts and have the chance to ask any questions. Additionally, all the essay team participants will have a chance to meet and socialize at Whirlyball on Jan. 24. Each team will have a mentor assigned from the essay committee to assist them on a more personal basis until the deadline for submission of the essays on March 1, 1999. The essay scholarships will be awarded May 16 at the 13th annual Friends' dinner at the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Dearborn. For more information about the contest, call Chris Reid of the American Arab and Jewish Friends, (313) 567-6225.
