northern mountains, and the summer

The Hermelins have attended sev-
eral receptions hosted by the various
embassies in Oslo. To make sure no
one is bored, Hermelin, an amateur
magician, sometimes performs tricks
for the foreign dignitaries. "I'm always
afraid he's going to pull some old rab-
bit out of a hat or bird out of his
pocket like he does for the grandkids,"
said Mrs. Hermelin, "but it hasn't
happened yet."
Last June the couple came back to
Detroit to be present when their
daughter Julie got married at their
Bingham Farms home. "Doreen han-
dled all aspects of our daughter's wed-
ding and did a great job, which was
not easy from this far away," said
Hermelin. "She accomplished a lot by
phone, fax and e-mail." A few days
- later they celebrated their 40th wed-
ding anniversary, then rushed back to
Oslo for the July 4 party.
All of the Hermelins' five children
and their spouses and grandchildren
— not to mention many friends —
have visited them at one time or
another since they moved to Norway.
Their daughter, Marcie, and three
children lived there for the first six
months, with periodic visits from her
husband. They participated in syna-
gogue activities, and the youngsters
attended the National School. "Oslo is
so safe that we allowed the kids to ride
their bikes anywhere in the city," said
Marcie.
Traveling by regular commercial
flights, Hermelin has returned home
five times in the past year...for
Pdssover, their daughter's wedding, a
quick 24-hour trip for Max Fisher's
birthday tribute dinner in August,
Rosh Hashanah, and their nephew's
wedding.
"Once you get on the job, you real-
ize you just can't pick up and leave
any time," he said. "There are many
things to do here, and relationships to
build with the government of Norway.
You can't do that and travel back and
forth very frequently.
The Hermelins enjoy having visi-
tors and showing off the country to
them. He has become a tour guide of
sorts, taking relatives and friends on
spur-of-the-moment jaunts to such
famous Norway attractions as the
Vigeland Sculpture Park, the Nobel
Hall, and Resistance Museum.
There will always be a supply of
salami and corned beef'at the ready, he
said. "If you happen to be in the
neighborhood, call and say hello." 111
