onathan Friendly, a veteran
journalist, journalism instruc-
tor and writing coach who's a
former assistant editor at the
New York Times, has been appointed
news editor of The Jewish News.
Friendly joined The Jewish News
this summer as a copy editor and
became interim news editor in
September.
In announcing the appointment,
Robert Sklar, edi-
tor of The Jewish
News, said:
"Jonathan's pro-

ence is exception-
al, but equally
important, he's a
keen thinker,
attentive listener
and tenacious
Jonathan Friendly
editor who knows
what news is and how to present it.
"I'm delighted to be working with
Jonathan. I know readers will find him
both accessible, passionate about news
and true to his name — namely,
friendly."
Friendly, 59, an Amherst College
graduate, served as adjunct lecturer in
the School of Journalism at Michigan
State University during the 1997-98
school year. That followed eight years
as director and executive editor of the
Master's Program in Journalism at the
University of Michigan. He worked
part-time as assistant city editor of The
Detroit News in 1995.

He joined the New York Times in
1970 as a copy editor. He soon rose to
assistant metropolitan editor, a posi-
tion he held for 10 years, until 1980.
He worked as a reporter from 1980 to
1986.
His professional experience includes
stints as assistant city editor and as a
reporter at the Minneapolis Tribune.
He started his career as a reporter at
the Raleigh (NC) News 6 , Observer in
1961.
Friendly and his wife, Lynn, have
four children. The couple lives in Ann
Arbor.
