ust as Israel stood by the U.S.
inthe Persian Gulf War, the
United States must stand by
the Jewish state to assure its
future, the mayor of New York City
declared Sunday in downtown Detroit.
Speaking before a record crowd of
2,253 guests at Yeshiva Beth Yehudah's
84th annual dinner in the Grand
Ballroom of the Westin Hotel, Mayor
Rudolph Giuliani said:
"America has very few good friends.
Israel is a very good friend of the U.S.
"Israel supported our country dur-
ing the Persian Gulf War, as our troops
lost their lives and as it withstood Scud
missile attacks. That good friendship
- sealed in blood - is rooted in a
shared deep commitment toward free-
dom, democracy and rule of law."
The blessing of freedom and
democracy should form the core of
our foreign policy, said the Republican
mayor, who was elected five years ago
despite New York City's heavily
Democratic majority and who is occa-
sionally mentioned as a possible GOP
presidential candidate.
"Our obligation," he said, "is to
spread this blessing throughout the
nation and throughout the world."
Rabbi Eli Mayerfeld, executive direc-
tor of Oakland County-based Yeshiva
Beth Yehudah, Michigan's largest Jewish

day school with 750 students, said
Giuliani was invited to speak because
"he's a good friend of Israel."
Yeshiva President Gary Torgow said
Giuliani's "presence and participation at
our dinner has added in great measure
to this vital endeavor for our schools."
Welcoming Giuliani, Detroit
Mayor Dennis Archer, a Democrat,
said, "There's no Republican or
Democratic way to pick up the
garbage or keep the streets safe."
That's right, Guiliani said, noting
that mayors wind up agreeing on ser-
vice-related issues like trash collection
about 95 percent of the time.
He recalled his 1996 visit to
Jerusalem, which came amid a rash of
bus bombings. He and Mayor Ehud
Olmert, who were elected the same
day in 1993, planned to ride a bus
together in a show of solidarity that
the bus system was safe.
While in Jerusalem, Giuliani joined
Olmert in making condolence calls to
the homes of three teenagers killed in
the bombings. As the two mayors left
the third shiva house, Giuliani said he
noticed protesters outside.
He figured the bombings had pro-
voked it, but then learned the protest
was about the lack of trash collection
service a week earlier.
Paul Borman, one of the general
dinner co-chairmen, characterized
Giuliani as "one of the great political
stars of today and of the future." ❑
