A Cool TV Rabbi

On "Suddenly Susan," Albie Selznick plays
a Jewish character with a Jewish
wife — how innovative.

lbie Selznick isn't a rabbi.

He just portrays one on TV.
Playing the role has
brought him closer to his
roots — but not too close.
Selznick, 39, distantly related to
movie mogul David 0. Selznick ("I
got the name, but not the money"),
plays Rabbi Ben Rubenstein on the
NBC sitcom "Suddenly Susan." In
show-biz this is called a recurring role,
which is not as good as being a regu-
lar, like series s3tar Brooke Shields, but
it's several steps above unemployment.
"Suddenly Susan" is part of the
NBC Monday night comedy lineup
that's suffered from lack of ratings.
Still, the program, whose diverse char-
acters work together at a San Francis-

co-based magazine, is often very
funny. Shields shows surprising comic
talent, and the cast, particularly Kathy
Griffin, who plays Shield's nemesis
Vickie Groener, is often better than
the material.
Selznick's Rabbi Ben married Grif-
fin's character at the end of last season,
and in many ways he is a unique sitcom
character. For one thing, he's a mentsch.
He's intelligent, wise and not a nerd in
the way rabbis often are portrayed on
television comedies (e.g., the rabbi who
counseled Elaine on "Seinfeld").
The other unique aspect of the role
is that Vickie is Jewish (though Kathy
Griffin is not), and it is rare to see
Jews married to other Jews on televi-
sion comedies. Currently, for example,
Paul Reiser has a non-Jewish wife
played by Helen Hunt on "Mad
About You," and Charles Shaughnessy
