To this day, that book by Joyce, along with his novel Ulysses and The Magic Mountain by Thomas Mann, are my literary bibles. JN: What would you most like peo- ple to know about Zebra and Other Stories? CP: At the heart of each of these sto- ries is a truth that I connected to very profoundly. For example, there actual- ly was an art teacher who came off the streets and taught in my elementary school. The boy in "Moon" is some- one very dear to me. The same goes for all the other individuals and their stories and their problems. ... I have been hearing something very interest- ing happening with these stories. Young people are reading them to their parents, and parents are reading them to their kids. There seems to be the potentiality for very serious com- munication. Zebra presents parents with a way of seeing how their chil- dren are struggling to create their own "maps" of the world, or what it is that's going on in the space between their ears as their maps are being formed. JN: Why do your novels such as The Chosen or The Promise have broad appeal when they center on Jewish culture? CP: James Joyce was once asked why he only wrote about Dublin. Even though he wrote about other places, we know Joyce as the writer of Dublin in the same way we know Dos- toyevsky as the writer of St. Petersburg and Kafka as the writer of Prague. So when he was asked why he only wrote about Dublin, Joyce responded by say- ing, "For myself I always write about Dublin, because if I can get to the heart of Dublin I can get to the heart of all the cities in the world. In the particular is contained the universal." JN: What do you think is the main challenge facing American Jewry today? CP: How to live as a distinct, cre- ative Jewish culture and at the same time be part of the core of American civilization. JN: What are you working on now? CP: I am working with the violinist Isaac Stern on his memoirs, a labor of love that I expect will be completed very soon. I then plan to write the third and concluding novel about the notori- ous and legendary artist Asher Lev. ❑ Open 7 Days a Week • Serving Beer and Wine rlIN 1 ANITA'S kitchen (248) 855-4150 31005 Orchard Lake Rd., Farmington Hills, MI IM= 1 ■ I 1 MIIIIMB FAMILY ITALIAN DINING & PIZZA "RATED #1 BY THE ONES WHO COUNT-OUR CUSTOMERS" 4033 W. 12 MILE, 3 Blks.
