Hooked on Chanukah: Avrohom
Rosenberg; Sameach Records

Hooked On Chanukah is a con-
temporary CD formatted in the very
predictable contemporary style. A fast
song followed by a slow song, two
songs in English, one in Yiddish.
Hooked on Chanukah is different.
There are no gratuitous saxophone
introductions and no nasal renditions
of popular nines in Brooklynese.
This CD features a well-rehearsed
and talented children's choir as the
primary vocalists. A small but lively
adult choir provides backup and bot-
tom range. Of note are the traditional
blessings for lighting the menorah and
"Moaz Tzur," the title track and the
very melodious, "There's a Light." If
you have yet to take the plunge into
contemporary Jewish music, this
might be the place to start. # # * 1/2

Songs Are Like Prayers; Brooks Arthur;
Neovox Records.
If you like Mel Torme, you'll love
this one. Brooks Arthur is best known
as a music producer. His stable of suc-
cesses includes: The Chiffons, Janis

Ian, Robin Williams, Bernadette
Peters and Liza Minelli. On this his
debut album, Arthur shows his true
love of music.
As a kid, Brooklyn-born Brooks
Arthur recalls, "I wanted to be a singer
in the worst way, a great pop singer
like my idols, Eddie Fisher and Bobby
Darin." After being coaxed to sing at a
parry, Arthur' rediscovered his voice
and his confidence. Making an album
became a labor of love. Brooks need-
ed to get this album out of his system.
The title cut came to him as a real-
ization why singers sing. It's part of
their soul. Brooks tries to relate to the

Neshama, the soul with his pleasant
renditions of "My Yiddishe Mama,"
"Shaine Vi Di Levana," with Lainie
Kazan, "Sunrise, Sunset," and "I Love
You Too Much," all standard borscht-
belt favorites. He also includes such
favorites as "Oh! My Papa" and
"Where Can I Go," a song written
about the new State of Israel that
Arthur used to sing as teenager.
Brooks feels this to be his signature
song and most appropriate to be
released in this, Israel's 50th anniver-
sary. For what it is, it's good. * *
