Tradition! Tradition!

In an attempt to bridge at least the
African American/Jewish music gap,
this bass and piano duo put classic
Jewish and spiritual tunes to jazz
riffs. The liner notes indicate that the
specific pieces were chosen "to speak
to the soul and emphasize the strong
similarities that are at the heart of the
suffering and joys of these two
worlds." David Chevan is assistant
professor of music at Southern
Connecticut University, in New
Haven. He has worked with jazz
greats Milt Hinton and Jerome
Harris and has published numerous
articles on jazz history. Warren Byrd
is an accompanist for the School of
Hartford Ballet and the Hartford
Academy for the Performing Arts.
His career includes working with
Archie Shepp and Eddie Henderson.
The CD was recorded live at the uni-
versity coffeehouse, which lends to
the lounge music motif these two
artists try to convey. Although the
arrangements are indeed, easy to lis-
ten to, a real jazz aficionado would
find the interpretations trite and not
provocative. It does make nice back-
ground music if you're having a cock-
tail parry. The Jewish cuts include
"Avadim Hayinu," the traditional
tune sung by enthusiasts at the
Pesach seder after the "Ma Nishtana"
and "Ani Maamim." The Rosh
Hashanah melody "Avinu Malkeinu,"
and the Friday night "Shalom
Aleichem" at over eight minutes
make what could be a great piece
rather monotonous. # tE
