The Center for Yoga, Relaxation
and Health offers a simple back
strengthening class to a sweat-filled,
body twisting sun salutations class
seven days a week. Ten classes cost just
$90, a month unlimited is $132 and a
five-month, 20-class card is $160. For
more information or a class schedule,
call 386-9642 (YOGA).
3) Health club membership —
Okay, okay. Not everyone is into
bending like a pretzel and holding it
for 10 agonizing seconds.
Yoga not your gig? Just want to
pump iron and get the aggression out
on a stationary bike? Then sign your-
self up for a membership at any one of
the area's health and sports clubs.
Want a little spirituality and culture
with the sweat? Then sidle up to the
membership desk at either of the
Jewish Community Centers of
Metropolitan Detroit to sign up for a
year's membership.
"Exercise makes you feel good for
your mind and your body because
when you are healthy physically it
helps your mind," explains Lester
Weiner, a towel boy and self-described
goodwill ambassador of the Jimmy
Prentis Morris JCC in Oak Park.
In addition to the health classes,
Weiner says the center invigorates the
spirit simply because it is Jewish in
nature.
"You want spirituality? We got rab-
bis walking around here all the time.
You aren't going to get that in a regu-
lar gym," he says.
Membership for one year, about
$800, is comparable to other facilities.
4) Bubble bath and lotion — A
plain bath is good — utilitarian and
hygienic at best but good, nonetheless.
A long soak in a bath filled with terrif-
ic smelling bubble bath and gentle
soaps followed by a thick slather of
rich, wonderful lotions is an experi-
ence rivaled only by a meeting with
Paul Newman over a gourmet meal he
whipped up.
"Today, we are always so busy that
we don't always take the time out to
pamper ourselves. When someone
gives bubble bath and lotion, they are
saying, 'Take the time to take care of
yourself,"' says Lori Karbal, whose
self-named boutique in Birmingham
carries everything from fun soap by
the inch to hard to find makeup and
skincare items, from sleepwear to per-
fume.
Prices range from $6.50 to $15 for
fragrant soap, $10.95 to $31 for rich
lotions, $10.95 to $30 for bubble
bath.
5) Flannel Sheets — This may be
the most dangerous suggestion on the
list because there is something so
womb-like about nestling in between
a set of cotton flannel sheets that it is
nearly impossible to wrench your
body from them after a long winter's
night. And we have a feeling that the
boss may not understand or accept the
blame you lay on the sheets day after
day for tardiness.
Roger Rotarius, bedding manager
at the Bed, Bath & Beyond store in
Farmington Hills, bought his first set
four years ago and was amazed at the
increased level of comfort.
"They add to the bed," he says. "It
is an alternative to putting on an elec-
tric blanket or an extra blanket. It is
warm and soft and comfortable."
The sheets come in all sizes and
designs and the price for sheets ranges
from a twin set (flat sheet, fitted sheet
and pillowcase) for $29.99 to upwards
of $80 per sheet for English quality.
6) Candles — Whether it's on the
ledge of the tub or lining your mantle,
on a festive table or beside the bed,
candles lend a certain intimacy and
magic that even the best of their elec-
tric lighting partners cannot.
"The flickering of the flames and
the scent can either invigorate or relax
the body and mind," says Kim
Dominick, manager of Wicks 'N
Sticks in the Oakland Mall. "They
create a mood like nothing else."
While tapers for the table are gen-
erally unscented to avoid the mixing
of smells, votive and pillar candles
come in invigorating scents like citrus
or ginger as well as relaxing scents like
lavender, chamomile and patchouli.
Seasonal scents such as pumpkin
spice for the fall and watermelon for
summer also come in a variety of
shapes and sizes.
Candles also are relatively inexpen-
sive. Votives range from 90 cents to
$2.50, tapers from 99 cents and up
and pillars from $3.99 and up.
7) Hot tub — This is a bit on the
far side. But who said you had to be
practical and cheap?
Sort of a combo massage and warm
bath complete with the bubbles, spas
