Each year as we celebrate Chanukah, we retell the story of the
Maccabees, who defeated the Syrians and found enough oil for one
day. Miraculously the oil lasted for eight days. This year there is
another story to celebrate in the Jewish community. It is the cen-
tennial celebration of the organized Jewish community of metropol-
itan Detroit. On Nov. 21, 1899, the Jewish Federation was estab-
lished to provide a central organization to help Jews at home and
abroad. In marking the 100 years, there are some exciting events cel-
ebrating this milestone.
One upcoming event is the menorah exhibit, Nov. 30-Dec. 13 at
Somerset in Troy, where local and national artisans will display 30
menorahs. Our gift guide cover displays Birmingham artist Joseph
Wesner's menorah, while inside the issue we intro-
duce you to more local artists who are 'part of this
project. In our second gift guide, to be published
Dec. 4, we will feature another menorah on the cover
and again profile more artists. We hope you will visit
this exciting exhibition. For more information about
the 100-year celebration of the Jewish community,
call (888) 469-0100 or visit the Internet site at
www.jewishdetroit100.org .
In addition to menorahs, how about some fresh
holiday recipes beyond latkes? Food writer and
gourmet cook Annabel Cohen reviews a new Jewish cookbook. If
you want to pamper yourself without gaining weight, Jill Davidson
Sklar has a dozen ideas for your body and soul.
And be sure to check out Cari Waldman's story and Glenn Triest's
photographs in "Picture Perfect." Whether it's a bar mitzvah or a
wedding, occasions and events require just the right outfit. Some
"real-people" models from our community provide great wardrobe
ideas for your next event. Thanks to all who have participated.
