Israeli Soccer Club
Makes History

Maccabi Haifa last week became the
first Israeli soccer club to advance to
the quarterfinals of a European tour-
nament, when they defeated SV Ried
of Austria by an aggregate score of 5-
3 from the two games.

Oct. 22 in Austria 2-1, but stormed
back with a 4-1 victory Nov. 5 in
Haifa.
Haifa's goals came from Alon
Mizrahi in the 32nd minute and
A.doram Kesei in the 62nd minute.
Michael Anicic tied the two-game
score at 3-3 for Ried in the 69th
minute, before Yossi Benayoun sealed
the win four minutes later. Substitute
Ibrahim Duro closed the scoring for
Haifa in the final seconds.
Haifa, who defeated French Cup
champions and European power
'Paris-St. Germain in the first round
n-4-3, awaits the December draw for
the quarterfinals._The two legs for the
next stage will take place March 4
and 18, 1999.
