Abe Foxman
Chosen For Award

Abe Foxman, national director of the
Anti-Defamation League and a child
survivor of the Holocaust, and David
Halpern of Livingston, N.J., a corn-
munity leader and child of survivors,
will receive the Israel Bonds Elie
Wiesel Holocaust Remembrance
Award for their
work in ensuring
the Shoah and its
lessons will never
be forgotten.
The presenta-
tion will be made
at the Elie Wiesel
Holocaust
Remembrance
Award dinner, 5
Abe Foxman
p.m. Sunday, Nov.
15, in New York
City. Wiesel — Nobel Peace laureate,
author, scholar and human rights
activist — will present the awards.
Also to be honored at the dinner
are 29 Holocaust survivors from com-
munities across the United States and
Canada. The Israel Bonds Elie Wiesel
Holocaust Remembrance Award was
established in 1985 to honor survivors
who have become national and inter-
national Jewish leaders.
Foxman is on the cutting edge of
the struggle to vanquish anti-
Semitism, extremism and bigotry,
eliminate discrimination and create
and reinforce respect for differences
among America's ethnic and racial
groups. An expert on the Holocaust
and the Jewish resistance, he is a
leader in developing educational pro-
grams on the subject and serves on the
U.S. Holocaust Memorial council.
Foxman was saved as an infant in
Vilna by his Polish-Catholic nanny,
who had him baptized during the war.
His parents — who survived the
Holocaust in which 14 relatives were
murdered — fought and won a bitter
custody battle with the nanny, after
which the family settled in the United
states. Foxman graduated from the
Flatbush Yeshiva in Brooklyn and City
College and holds a law degree from
New York University School of Law.
He joined the ADL in 1965.
