Rabbi Lewis M Barth
Rabbi Lewis M. Barth, dean of
Hebrew Union College-Jewish
Institute of Religion in Los Angeles,
and professor of Midrash and related
literature, will be scholar-in-residence
Nov. 13-14 at Temple Beth El's 17th
annual Richard C. Hertz Institute on
Reform Judaism.
The institute was established by
Ellin Arden Lawson in memory of her
father and mother, Manuel E. and
Selma E. Arden, and in honor of the
retirement of Dr. Hertz as senior
rabbi.
A UCLA graduate, Barth was
ordained and received his doctorate
from HUC-JIR in Cincinnati. A
member of the Los Angeles faculty
since 1969, he first served as dean
during the 1970s. He was re-appoint-
ed to the position in July 1997. In
addition to courses on Midrash and
Aramaic, Barth has taught seminars on
"Rabbis as Charismatics and Wonder
Workers."
As part of the HUC-JIR/University
of Southern California joint Judaic
Studies program, Barth has taught an
"Introduction to Jewish History" and
a course on "Jerusalem as a Holy City
for Jews, Christians and Muslims."
Barth spends alternate summers in
Berlin, where he teaches Jewish reli-
gious thought at an institute for
German Protestant theology stu-
dents. He has twice served on
the faculty of the Union of
American Hebrew
Congregations' summer
Spirituality Kallah at the
University of California at Santa
Cruz, where he and his wife, Dr.
Joye Weisel-Barth, a psycholo-
gist, lecture on Jewish family
values.
Barth is founding co-chair of
the Berit Mila Board of Reform
Judaism and, working with Dr.
David James, founding chair,
created a program that has now
trained nearly 200 physicians
and four certified nurse mid-
wives as mohalirn. He is the edi-
tor of Berit Mila in the Reform
Context, the first major work in
Reform Judaism on this subject.
Barth is co-editor, with Ruth
Nussbaum, of Max Nussbaum:
From Berlin to Hollywood, A
Mid-Century Vision of Jewish
Life. The work is a volume of
sermons, speeches and essays by Rabbi
Nussbaum, community leader and
rabbi of Temple Israel, Hollywood,
from 1943-1974.
Weekend
scholar-in-
residence
Nov. 13-14.
Barth will speak three times at
Temple Beth El. At 8 p.m. Friday,
Nov. 13, his topic at Shabbat services
will be "Books on Judaism by Famous
Jews: Take Dershowitz for Example."
On Saturday, Nov. 14, Barth will
speak at a 9:15 a.m. Torah convoca-
tion on "Midrashic Selections on the
Torah Portion Chaye Sarah." At 10:30
a.m. Shabbat services, he will speak on
"Buying Retail, Matchmaking and
Prayer: Modern Issues in Ancient
Garb."
The Hertz Institute is open to the
community without charge; reserva-
tions are not necessary.
