Also, he added, the Wye agreement
is supported overwhelmingly by the
public and in the Knesset, so the
extremist right cannot act in the faith,
which they had during Rabin's regime,

Dr. Yuchtman-Ya'ar, however, said
Netanyahu's right-wing credentials are
long-established. "They had high
hopes and dashed expectations with
Netanyahu, which they never had

behavior of the spiritual leaders of the
religious right.

al of Kiryat Arba settler Danny Vargas,
Hebron Rabbi Moshe Levinger and

blamed the government for the mur-
der. Rabbi Levinger is under police
investigation for suspicion of incite-
ment.
Yet, national religious leader Rabbi
Haim Druckman is speaking publicly
against "crossing red lines," and other
rabbis in this camp also are counseling
caution.
The consensus is that even if politi-
cal conditions are ripe for an assassina-
tion, and even if there is someone
ready to pull the trigger, the security
forces out to stop him today are more
alert and wiser than they were three

French Jews
Say Go Slow

Leaders of the French Jewish commu-
nity have asked the World Jewish
Congress for moderation as it pursues
Holocaust restitution in France. They
say educating the French people about
their wartime past — including col-
laboration with the Nazis and deport-
ing Jews — takes priority over mone-
tary reparations.
The appeal comes as the WJC pre-
pares to negotiate payment of
Holocaust-era claims with 15 coun-
tries, including France, on behalf of
Jewish victims and their heirs. Some
