testimonial dinner for Chazzan Klein
in 1995, Steven Rabinovitz, a past
president of Congregation B'nai

1972, was ordained at the Jewish
Theological Seminary of America in
1967. His 1965 guidebook was a
graduation gift from the late Rabbi
Wolfe Kelman, then executive vice
president of the Rabbinical Assembly.
"I've added to my manual so
much, the binding has broken down
many times," Nelson said. "I've
always taped it back together, so it
looks nothing like it did in 1965. It's
a very personal manual. It's what has
worked for me."
He's willing to move into the 21st
century liturgically. But Nelson still
treasures the 1940s manual his late
father, Rabbi Harry Nelson, used as a
congregational rabbi for 30 years at
Rodeth Shalom in Bridgeport, Conn.
As he put it: "Those prayers from
two generations ago have a lot of
thee's and thou's, which may sound
stilted to my generation, but they are
very beautiful. They also hint more
and don't always try to flesh every-
