educational toy store.
Frances Fine's kindergarten visitors
listened to stories, then colored a book
about Shabbat. Jesse Medina hung out
with his pal Sue Ferrari, a Southfield
police officer he met while his mom
was filing a report at the station.
"I think this is fantastic," said
Ferrari, pointing to the busily decorat-
ed classroom. "Jesse also visits me at
the station, and I brought him up to a
fair in my town, Romeo, once. We

hang out together. He's a cool guy."
As the guests left, the Hillel lobby
resounded with good-byes, a few tears
and a lot of grownup shmoozing.
"I really enjoyed it," said Brenda
Saperstein, who was visiting her sec-
ond-grade friend, Emily Drucker. "I'm
only sorry my 10-year-old daughter in
the Bloomfield Hills schools didn't get
to come here."
Special Persons' Day, originally
called Grandparents' Day, is an old
Hillel tradition reintroduced this fall
after a six-year hiatus, said Marianne
Bloomberg, Hillel's development direc-
tor. This year, it was held Oct. 21.
"We do this to reach out to members
of the family that aren't usually here on
a regular basis, to give them an idea of
what goes on at Hillel," she said.
