Little
Coincidences

"Small Miracles" will be
the topic for author
Yitta Halberstam.

hen Yitta Halberstam's
brother-in-law was dat-
ing Judith Leventhal,
the two women met and
saw each other often. After the couple
stopped dating, the women stopped
seeing each other, too.
Some time later, the ladies hap-
pened to be on the same New York
elevator. They decided to have lunch
and get reacquainted.
Halberstam talked about Holy
Brother: Enchanted Stories and
Heartwarming Tales About Shlomo
Carlebach, the book she had written.
Leventhal, a psychotherapist, recount-
ed recent coincidences that had great
impact on people and expressed an
interest in writing a book about the
subject.
The two decided to collaborate.
That chance meeting, followed by
their writing success with Small
Miracles, a best seller, is like so many
of the anecdotes making up their first
book and now their second, Small
Miracles II.
"We're using coincidences to show
that the world isn't random," said
Halberstam, a feature writer for
national magazines, including Working
Woman and Parade. "God must be out
there choreographing our lives."
The authors tell the story of immi-
grants living in New York who were
fixed up on a blind date. During the
course of the evening, they learned
that she, taking on a Christian identi-
ty to survive, had tossed him apples
while he was in a concentration camp.
"I've felt the excitement of spiritual
optimism since working on these
books," said Halberstam, whose pub-
lisher has asked her to collaborate on
three more.
