D

espite a last-minute speaker

cancellation, organizers of
the Jewish Book Fair say
they are confident of hav-
ing another successful week.
"I'm told this is the smoothest it's
ever been," said Amy Brode, director of
the Jewish Book Fair at the Jewish
Community Center of Metropolitan
Detroit. Brode was able to reach more
people then usual, as the Kahn JCC
was a polling place for Tuesday's elec-
tion.
The fair, now in its 47th year, is the
oldest and largest Jewish book fair in
the nation. From Nov. 7-15, it will
attract thousands of visitors to 45
scheduled events that include a local
authors day, music and dancing and a

parade of notable speakers.
Brode said that more than 4,000
titles, totaling 15,000 books, will be
on display, and for sale, at the Kahn
and Jimmy Prentis Morris buildings.
One highlighted speaker bowed out
last week, however. Shimon Peres, for-
mer Israeli prime minister wlo was
scheduled to talk.about his new book
For The Future of Israel, cancelled with
a yet-to-be disclosed reason. Brode said
she is waiting to hear from his people
about the reason the Nobel Peace Prize-
winning laureate won't be coming.
In Peres' place on Nov. 15 at 8 p.m.
will be Michael Medved, former chief
film critic for the New York Post and
host of a syndicated radio talk show
out of Seattle. He's former co-host of
the TV show, "Sneak Previews." He
will speak on "Hollywood Values vs.
Jewish Values".
