Judith Lowe
Knopper
Judith Lowe Knopper, a long-time
teacher in Southfield
and activist in the
Detroit Jewish commu-
nity, died Oct. 29. The
West Bloomfield resi-
dent was 53.
Mrs. Knopper, who
retired five years ago, was
a teacher at Stevenson
Elementary School in
Southfield for 28 years.
"She was wonderful
with children and
devoted to her stu-
dents," said Cantor

Mrs. Knopper earned her mas-
ter's degree in education at Oakland
University and her undergraduate
degree at Wayne State University.
She was active in the Anti-
Defamation League, the Jewish
National Fund and the Jewish Feder-
ation of Metropolitan Detroit in
addition to Adat Shalom Synagogue.
Passions included gardening and
birds. Her back yard was filled with
bird feeders.
"She was an
amazing person,"
said her brother,
Jonathan Lowe.
"She had a talent
for being there
when you needed
her. Her religion
and the Jewish
people were very,
very important to
her."
For the Jewish
National Fund, she
organized dinner
events and
acquired carloads of tree saplings
for each table so guests could take
them home. She was an active vol-
unteer for the Women's Division of

DR MAURICE BORIN, 86, of
Southfield, died Nov. 1. Dr. Bonin
had a general practice with privileges
at Sinai and Mt. Carmel Hospital. He
was a graduate of the University of
Michigan Medical School in 1938,
was a member of the American Med-
ical Association and a Chairman of
the Anesthesiology Department at
Mt. Carmel Hospital.
