Media's Role Probed By Panel

Who controls what is seen on the
nightly news? Who controls what is
read in newspapers? What role do the
media play in shaping public opinion?
These questions are only a prelude
to the discussion awaiting participants
in "Spinning Out of Control: A
Critique of Media's Role in Today's
Society," 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10,
at Temple Israel.
Sponsored by Mitzvah Chapter of
Jewish Women International, this pro-
gram will feature four speakers whose
contributions to their profession are
recognized and respected. They are:
*Laura Berman, columnist for The
Detroit News since 1995, who has cov-
ered a wide range of local, national
and international stories. Her career
highlights include creating and imple-
menting a lifestyle column for The
News between 1986-1992, and on spe-
cial assignment, covering the 1980
Republican National Convention in
Detroit, interviewing Zsa Zsa Gabor
and reporting on the William

reporter, bureau chief and columnist
for the New Haven Register.
"Sherry Margolis, weekday anchor
since 1984 for WJBK-Fox2 News. Her
professional and broadcasting career
began at WUTV-TV in Buffalo,
where she was a producer and host of
the daily morning children's program,
"Jelly Roll Review." She also worked
as a weather anchor, news anchor and
reporter before coming to Fox2.
Margolis earned an Emmy for Best
News Anchor in 1993.
Following the program, there will be
light refreshments provided by the
Bingham Farms-based Unique
Corporation. The cost is $10 for JWI
members and $15 for non-members. For
