here is a fall tradition at
Farmington Hills Harrison
High School. It is called
"winning." Coach John
Herrington instilled it into its nation-
ally ranked football team, and his
players are expected to carry it on
weekly.
Before every kickoff of every game
this year, another tradition has been
started by Blake Boesky, the fiery
Idefensive back who makes his voice
eard all over the field while exhort-
ing the kickoff team.
"Blake is probably the most spirit-
ed player out there," Herrington said
of the senior 5-foot-8, 160-pound
monster back. "He's very emotional
on the field and he's one of the lead-
ers of this team. They all see it."
Said Boesky, "It's a great feeling to
Ilay at this school and look at all the
tradition here. Coach Herrington
says, 'Make your own tradition,' and
that's what I try to do."
The winning tradition is something
that Boesky understands well, playing
at a school and for a coach that has
won eight state titles in 11 tries in
three different classes since 1976.

"Losing isn't an option," he said.
"We take each game as it comes, but
we never expect to lose."
Even trailing to Westland John
Glenn in the Western Lakes Activi-
ties Association championship game
on Oct. 23, the team was not con-
cerned.
"We're a confident team and we
showed a lot of heart coming back to
win (20-14)," he said.
Said Herrington of Boesky, "He's
got green and gold [school colors]
blood in him and he loves the tradi-
tions of the school."
Boesky, in addition to playing in
the defensive backfield, plays some on
offense. But making tackles is his
specialty — 20 solo, 14 assisted and
four sacks so far this season — and
he leads the team with three intercep-
tions. His play at monster back
earned him a spot on- the All-Western
Division league team.
"I don't think it's a surprise, but it's
definitely a treat," Boesky said of his
award. "I wouldn't be mad if I didn't
get anything."
Boesky isn't looking to stop there.
"I always think I can do better, and
in my heart I know I can," he said. "I
think that's what the coaches like
because I'm a tough kid and always
want to get better."
As a punt returner, he had a 78-
yard punt return for a touchdown
— the longest in school history. He
has 14 returns for 165 yards this
