"Each year's event showcases items
from the gift shop with a different
theme," Katz said. This show high-
lighted American presidential first
ladies.
Dubbed "the first lady of volun-
teering," Barbara Frankel served for
the eighth time as narrator of the
fashion show. After the modeling,
guest speaker Victoria Valentine gave
her slide show presentation on first-
lady presidential ball gowns.
Fun facts about former first ladies

As the narrator described Dolly
Madison's dislike for drab clothing
and plain bonnets, and her purchase
of a colorful pet parrot in protest of
her Quaker upbringing, Shirley
Parsky modeled a vivid bright blue
and lime green velour pant set.
The fact that Louisa Johnson
Adams was the only foreign-born first
lady, having been raised in France, set
the scene for model Celia Wilson to
wear what was depicted as a French-
inspired outfit.
Alpern life enhancement program
director and master gardener and bird
authority Jackie Smith appropriately
sported a black beaded cardigan with
a subtle floral pattern.
Dubbed "future first ladies," young
Rie and Sarah, daughters of office
manager Beth Bredau-Tagaki, dis-
played toys from the children's section
of the gift shop.
More than 200 residents and fami-
ly members attended the annual
show. Following a display of fashion
ensembles and accessory items, and
vignettes about Mary Todd Lincoln's
shopping obses-
sion and Jackie
Kennedy's fashiOn
fads, guests were
invited to explore
the gift shop in
support of the
